The Dunmow Decluttering Swift Sort - Inspiration for a quick declutter

Today I'm looking at something I see time and time again whilst decluttering kitchens - herb and spices everywhere! When store cupboards are disorganised and contents aren't easy to access, it's common to find lots of forgotten, out of date items and duplicates A few minutes spent checking and organising now can save you time searching for what you need whilst cooking and potentially save you money.

• Set a timer for 20 minutes and clear a space at a table or worktop where you can gather everything together.

• Open up all of your kitchen drawers and cupboards and search out all of your herbs and spices, salts and peppers. Gather them all together. Separate into herbs, spices, salts and peppers. Now its time to work through each item.

• First, check the date and contents and see if it's edible. Now, check for duplicates - do you have two or three of the same item? Rinse and recycle or repurpose and empty jars.

• With the remaining items have a really good think about what you use when you're cooking. It makes sense for the herbs and spices that you use most regularly to be close to hand and easily accessible when you're cooking. With any less used items, you might be inspired to find a new recipe.

• Now that you've decluttered, make a note of exactly what you have and anything that needs replacing. Finally, organise all of the herbs and spices into the same general area. I'm not a fan of containers for containers sake, but herbs and spices are one area where I do recommend them. This will make it much simpler to get your hands on what you need in the future.

• Once your herbs and spices have been organised, try to set aside just a few minutes each month to review what you have, whether it's running low and plan ahead for what may be needed.
